DESCRIPTION

The main objective of this course is to help the students to increase their cultural awareness and sensitivity. It also intends to help the students to develop effective strategies in dealing with potential cultural conflicts and improve their intercultural communicative competence and enhance the students’ communication skills necessary for success in the global workplace.


OBJECTIVES

T The goal of this course is to enhance mutual understanding of cultural diversity and intercultural communication competence in the global workplace by providing globally diverse perspectives on business communication.


 Upon satisfactory completion of the course, students should:

  • Grasp the theoretical foundation of the course which remains pluralist

  • Understand the major practical issues of intercultural business communication

  • Acquire an intermediate level of competence in managing and resolving problems and issues with business counterparts from other cultures;

  • Acquire an intermediate level of research competence in intercultural business communication theory and practice.



COURSE ASSESSMENT

  • Class Attendance: 10%. Responsible attendance is expected of each individual enrolled in this course. Iwill circulate a sign-up sheet every day that we are scheduled to meet and you will forfeit one full percentagepoint for every unexcused absence beyond three. If you miss a lecture you  are responsible for obtaining anymissed notes and/or handouts on your own unless you are officially excused.

 You may be officially excused from a class meeting for one of four reasons: (1) You have an illness that prevents you from attending class and a doctor's note to that effect; (2) You have a personal emergency like a death in the family and are either excused before class or can document the emergency afterwards; (3) You have a university sponsored obligation (participation in a sporting event or student organization sponsored project)and are excused before the examination or case presentation; or, (4) You have the absence officially excused in writing by the Dean of Economics & Management.

  • Group/individual presentation & Class discussion: 10%. Students will be assigned presentations  on the course topics, and are encouraged to actively participate in the class discussion in English.

  • Case analysis: 20%. For a 2 hour case analysis test,the students should finish on time. The  students are encouraged  to analyze the  cases in English.

  • Examinations: 60%.  There will be 2  examinations (please note specific days and dates listed in the calendar) including the Midterm and Final examinations during this semester.  Midterm Exam will be worth 25%, while the Final will be worth 35%. The questions will come from the assigned reading material, the lecture notes, as well as classdiscussions and exercises. Test questions will be presented as multiple choice, true/false, and short essay.For theessay, it will be a critical review of ICC theories with clear thesis statement andlogical organization.

  • Learn to make cross-cultural comparisons of different pragmatic rules used in various speech acts.

  • Understand how gift-gibing practices vary from culture to culture
